LWSMMR/LBWG

Land-Based Light-Water Small Medium and Modular Reactors Working Group (LW-SMMR/LB WG)

The MDEP Land-Based Light-Water Small Medium and Modular Reactors Working Group (LW-SMMR/LB WG) was approved by MDEP Policy Group in September 2024. The group's work is focused on the safety issues of MDEP members designs of Land-Based LW-SMMRs.

The regulatory authorities and designers currently participating in the LW-SMMR/LB WG represent the following countries:

  • Argentina
  • China
  • Russia
  • Türkiye

CORDEL participates in the LW-SMMR/LB WG as an observer

The main objectives of the LW-SMMR/LB WG are:

  • to leverage resources and ensure that the LW-SMMR/LB designs reviews remain safety-focused;
  • to facilitate the exchange of information on key topics such as the implementation of the first principle of the Vienna Declaration, national regulatory frameworks for LW-SMMRs, the use of new materials, safety assessment approaches, spent fuel management strategies, and the application of Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA), taking into account both design-specific and country-specific licensing differences.

The LW-SMMR/LB WG reports its status to the MDEP Management Board (MB) during bi-annual MB meetings.
