VVER Working Group (VVERWG)
The MDEP VVER Working Group (VVERWG) was approved by MDEP Policy Group
in September 2013. The group's work is focused on the safety reviews of
Rosatom's VVER reactors.
The national regulatory authorities participating in the VVERWG
include:
- People's Republic of China: National Nuclear Safety Administration
(NNSA)
- Hungary: Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA)
- Russian Federation: Rostechnadzor
- Türkiye: Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NDK)
The VVERWG's main objectives are as follows:
- to leverage resources and ensure that the VVER design reviews remain
safety-focused;
- to exchange information about their safety reviews in the areas of
Fukushima lessons learned enhancements, safety systems, reactor
pressure vessel and primary circuit, construction oversight, severe
accidents, accidents and transients, risk-informed regulatory
activities, taking into account design differences among countries and
differences in licensing processes.
The VVERWG provides status updates to the MDEP Management Board (MB)
during its bi-annual meetings.
Key stakeholders with whom the VVERWG interacts routinely include
Rosatom and utilities pursuing licensing and construction of the VVER,
such as Akkuyu Power Company in Türkiye.
