Description

The typical waste unit is a BWR or PWR fuel element, consisting of numerous fuel rods. The fuel rods themselves consist of the Zircaloy cladding containing the UO2 fuel pellets. Radionuclides are contained in both the fuel pellets and the cladding. A small fraction (~7 %) of the spent fuel inventory consists of Mixed-Oxide (MOX) fuel. The fuel elements have an average burnup of ~48 GWd/tIHM.
