Under an agreement with the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, (JAERI), the NEA supported an international research project with the goal of developing a plant safety monitoring and assessment system, known as the PLASMA Project, for use with VVERs*. This project was completed in 2000.
The Norwegian Institutt for Energiteknikk (IFE), the operator of the OECD Halden Reactor Project, carried out this project with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (KFKI), the Atomic Energy Research Institute of Hungary (AEKI), and the PAKS Nuclear Power Plant Ltd, where the system was implemented and demonstrated.
The PLASMA system was intended to be generic in nature and thus applicable to various VVERs. In addition to a target installation at the Paks nuclear power plant in Hungary, a comprehensive user training programme was implemented.
Participating countries: Hungary, Japan, Norway
Project period: 1998-2000
The distribution of this package is restricted and subject to prior approval.
