Installing LaTeX under Unix systems

The free LaTeX distribution for Unix systems can be found on any CTAN site. The best way to get going is to download the file /tex-archive/systems/unix/unixtex.ftp. This file gives instructions about which files you need to download and how to install them. As a minimum, you need the web, web2c, tex and latex file hierarchy and dvips. If you are using LaTeX under Unix in an interactive way (rather than just running it in batch mode), you will also need the xdvik (part of the standard Unix TeX/LaTeX distribution on the CTAN sites), Ghostscript, and and gv programs to view your files on the screen.
