Nuclear safety

Nuclear safety publications and reports Heads of the nuclear regulatory agencies of ten countries met on 4 March 2008 at the NEA to discuss progress in an important international initiative, the Multinational Design Evaluation Programme (MDEP), for which the NEA had been acting as Technical Secretariat of Stage 2. During the meeting chaired by Mr. André-Claude Lacoste, Chairman of the French Nuclear Safety Authority, and following the successful completion of the MDEP pilot project launched in 2006, the regulators agreed to enter a new phase of co-operation and to launch a programme of work, including design-specific and issue-specific activities, where results are expected in the short term. Design-specific activities will draw participants from nuclear regulatory agencies of countries which are actively reviewing, or preparing to review, a specific reactor design. Issue-specific, cross-cutting activities will address specific regulatory and technical challenges like the codes and standards for nuclear power plant components, multinational vendor inspection programmes, and digital instrumentation and control standards. The NEA has been invited to continue its support for the MDEP in its role as Technical Secretariat. More information is available at www.oecd-nea.org/news/2008/2008-01.html.

Radiological protection

Nuclear science publications

The NEA Expert Group on the Public Health Perspective in Radiological Protection (EGPH) met on 17-18 March 2008 to discuss progress in the four survey-based case studies it is currently carrying out. The four case studies examine the following areas:

  • radon exposure;
  • justifying medical exposures;
  • public health judgement and decision making based on new scientific evidence; and
  • managing individual differences (age, gender, genetic susceptibility).

The case studies will provide input to a workshop planned for 2009 on how public health considerations may affect the application of radiological protection principles. More information is available at www.oecd-nea.org/rp/egph.html.

The NEA Expert Group on the Implications of ICRP Recommendations (EGIR) met on 27-28 March 2008 to review the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) document Environmental Protection: The Concept and Use of Reference Animals and Plants. This document sets out the ICRP's approach to the radiological protection of the environment and all non-human species. Initial responses to the document from EGIR members were positive, although they looked forward to the document being supplemented by a description of the overall ICRP radiological protection framework as it is intended to relate to environmental protection. More information is available at www.oecd-nea.org/rp/egir.html.
