Nuclear safety

A workshop on Improving Nuclear Safety Through Operating Experience Feedback: Present Challenges and Future Solutions will be held on 29-31 May 2006 in Cologne, Germany. The aim of this workshop is to help the participants further develop operating experience systems and utilise them more efficiently to support safe nuclear power plant operation. More information is available at www.oecd-nea.org/nsd/workshops/opex2006/ .

Nuclear science

During the week of 23-27 January 2006 the NEA Working Party on Scientific Issues of the Fuel Cycle (WPFC), the NEA Task Force on Reactor-based Plutonium Disposition (TFRPD) and the NEA Working Party on Scientific Issues in Reactor Systems (WPRS) met in Paris, France. The WPFC and the WPRS agreed to pursue joint activities to study minor actinide burning in light water reactors. During the TFRPD meeting, presentations were made on progress to date and planned work on the reactor physics and in-core fuel behaviour benchmarks for reactor-based plutonium disposition. The activities of the WPRS have been reorganised into three main working areas: experimental databases and evaluations; reactor technology; radiation transport and shielding. It was agreed during the meeting of the WPRS that in the area of reactor technology, benchmarks for pebble bed modular reactors (PBMR) should be particularly emphasized in future work. Following these meetings a workshop on the PBMR coupled neutronics/thermal hydraulics transient benchmark was held at NEA headquarters. More information is available at www.oecd-nea.org/science/.
