3. DESCRIPTION

A series of full scale reactor containment experiments was performed in the Marviken Power Station, the abandoned Swedish nuclear plant, which was originally built as a direct cycle BHWR with natural circulation. These experiments were oriented towards the enhancement of reactor safety and were carried out as a joint project.

The experiments included studies of:
- containment response to simulated ruptures in pipe systems connected to the pressure vessel - blowdown
- iodine transport within the containment and containment leakage during and after blowdown
- auxiliary component response to and behaviour under loss of coolant accident conditions within a containment

The reports present and discuss the characteristic responses of the Marviken containment to the sixteen blowdown runs, which were carried out under different conditions with the objective of establishing a basis for testing computer codes. The reports contain also descriptions of the Marviken test facility, the instrumentation system and the data processing operations. A review of the accuracy of the most fundamental parameters, the discharge mass flow rate, containment pressure and containment temperature is also given, followed by some comments on the limited attempt to verify computer codes within the project.

A special group from the Gesellschaft fur Kernforschung (GfK), Karlsruhe, was attached to the project with the specific aim of studying pressure oscillations in the wetwell water pool While the GfK instrumentation and data collection systems were separate from those of the project, the results of the evaluations of these measurements are reported in this series, both as an integral part of the blowdown experiment evaluations when the information is relevant and in a comprehensive manner in separate reports of the series.


These experiments were carried out during the period from August 1972 to May 1973. The organizations represented were Denmark, Germany, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the United States.
