Second Workshop on
Utilisation and Reliability of High Power Accelerators

Aix-en-Provence, France,
from 22 to 24 November 1999

Introduction

The Nuclear Science Committee (NSC) of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) organised a second Workshop on "Utilisation and Reliability of High Power Accelerators".  The Workshop was held at Aix-en-Provence, France, from 22 to 24 November 1999, and will be hosted by CEA Cadarache.

Background

R&D activities and construction plans related to high power proton accelerators (HPPAs) are being considered in various countries to promote basic and applied sciences, including accelerator-driven nuclear energy systems (ADS).  The performance of such hybrid nuclear systems depends to a large extent on the specification and reliability of the particle accelerator.

The present meeting is a follow-up to the first workshop on "Utilisation and Reliability of High Power Accelerators" that was hosted by JAERI and was held in Mito, Japan on 13-15 October 1998.  Many of the questions discussed at that workshop will be further developed at this meeting.  In addition, there will be specific presentations devoted to safety, regulatory and technological requirements for the commissioning, operation and restart of hybrid nuclear systems.  A list of topics is given below.

Dates and Place of the Workshop

The Workshop started in the morning of 22 November and finished in the late afternoon of 24 November.  The Workshop was held at Le Centre de Congres, Aix-en-Provence, France.

List of Topics

The meeting consisted of plenary sessions with invited and contributed papers, followed by a summary of the session chairmen, a general discussion and a conclusion at the end of the workshop.

The following topics was covered:
