3. NATURE OF PHYSICAL PROBLEM SOLVED

Solves the steady state or the transient heat conduction equation in planar or cylindrical geometry.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

The finite element method is used. Input are the finite element nodes, the 'Fourier' type boundary conditions, the conductivity, the imposed temperatures at certain nodes, the incoming or outgoing heat fluxes and in the time dependent case the initial temperature distribution. The Cholesky method is used to solve the linear equation system.

The execution of a sample problem with the following characteristics took 55 secs of CPU time on CDC 7600: 347 nodes, 607 elements, bandwidth 17, axisymmetric geometry, steady state calculation.
