Expert Group on 3D Radiation Transport Benchmarks

Scope

The Expert Group deals with scientific issues in the field of deterministic and stochastic methods and computer codes relative to three dimensional radiation transport. Applications encompass transport through large and complex shields including void regions and highly heterogeneous reactor cores. Methods include discrete ordinates, nodal transport, finite elements with spherical harmonics, collision probabilities, Monte Carlo, etc.

Objectives

  • to develop benchmarks and comparison exercises for 3D radiation transport computer codes;
  • to carry out validation of methods and identify their strength, limitations and accuracy;
  • to suggest needs for method development.

Expert Group Meetings

  • The first meeting of the Expert Group was held on Thursday 13 September 2001, at Little America Hotel, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in conjunction with the 2001 ANS International Meeting on Mathematical Methods for Nuclear Applications (M&C 2001).
  • The second meeting was held on 11 June 2002 in Hollywood, Florida, USA, in conjunction with the 2002 ANS Annual Meeting.
  • The third meeting took place on 19 November 2002, Washinton. D.C., USA, during the 2002 ANS Winter Meeting.
  • The fourth meeting of the Expert Group was held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, USA, during the Conference on Nuclear Mathematical and Computational Sciences (M&C 2003), 6-10 April 2003, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, USA.
  • First Organizational Meeting on Benchmarking the Accuracy of Solution of 3-Dimensional Transport Codes and Methods over a Range in Parameter Space, 6-8 pm, Tuesday, April 17, 2007, San Diego Room, Monterey Marriott Hotel, Monterey, California, Summary of the meeting and viewgraphs presented.
