Expert groups on structural and fuel materials meet to advance materials science activities

Working Party on Materials Science Issues in Nuclear Fuels and Structural Materials

The Working Party on Materials Science Issues in Nuclear Fuels and Structural Materials (WPFM) and its two new expert groups - the Expert Group on Structural Materials (EGSM) and the Expert Group on Fuels Materials (EGFM) – recently held a meeting to elect their chairs and discuss their objectives.

The WPFM was established in 2021 to address materials science aspects of nuclear fuel, cladding and structural materials and to support the development and selection of innovative and advanced materials solutions. The WPFM aims to develop and evaluate experimental methods, data assessment and preservation, as well as to advance multi-scale modelling and simulation. It focuses on strengthening these fields together to improve validated predictive methodologies for assessment and design purposes.

The meeting was an opportunity to discuss possible actions that might continue to promote cross-cutting activities between the EGSM and EGFM, including activities that will create more opportunities for dialogue between the modelling and simulation and the experimental communities.

The next meeting of the working groups will take place in May at the NEA premises in Paris to analyse follow-up actions and set initiatives.
