WGCS International Workshop on Mechanical Codes and Standards: In-Service Inspection

The NEA held a virtual workshop on the best regulatory practices in In-Service Inspection (ISI) in the nuclear sector on 11-14 April 2022.

Organised by the NEA Working Group on Codes and Standards (WGCS) in co-operation with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC), the event brought together regulators, international experts and representatives of the industry and standards development organisations to review and compare the ISI provisions in codes and standards, document the differences and discuss potential modifications to harmonise the ISI programmes.

Topics addressed:

Workshop participants discussed the ISI programmes for the reactor pressure vessel welds. Specifics covered included country-specific history of inspections, basis for inspection intervals, inspection coverage, evolution of NDE techniques, and additional regulatory requirements for this component.

The four-day workshop included the following sessions:

  • Session 1: Component-specific ISI programmes
  • Session 2: Non destructive examination techniques
  • Session 3: Extending ISI intervals
  • Session 4: Design for inspection
