There is a growing interest from some nuclear regulatory bodies, as well as licensees, in methods and approaches that can be used to ensure that the licensee organisations are well structured and have sufficient resources and competencies to manage safety. To address these and other nuclear plant organisational safety-related issues a NEA Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) workshop was held in Uppsala, Sweden on 8-10 September 2008. The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority hosted the workshop with support from the European Union’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) Institute for Energy (IE). The objective was to identify and compare methods and approaches that can be used to demonstrate that licensees have suitable organisational structures, resources and competencies to manage safety throughout the facility life cycle.
