The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) has formally become a Party to the Nuclear Education, Skills and Technology (NEST) Framework, joining a growing group of countries committed to strengthening nuclear education and training worldwide.

Following the signing of the Act of Adhesion on 5 March 2026, institutions in Sweden are now eligible to participate in existing NEST Projects or to initiate new multinational and multidisciplinary training initiatives in collaboration with at least two other NEST countries. This milestone marks an important step in expanding Sweden’s engagement in international capacity building and knowledge transfer in the nuclear field.

Swedish organisations are already seeing the benefits of this membership. The KTH Royal Institute of Technology has recently become a Participating Organisation in the NEST Thermodynamic Characterisation of Fuel Debris and Fission Products Based on Scenario Analysis of Severe Accident Progression (TCOFF-II) project, with plans to host their first NEST Fellow in the coming months.

The addition of Sweden brings the total number of participating countries in NEST to 15. Launched in 2019, the Framework supports multidisciplinary, hands-on, project-based learning to address key challenges in nuclear science and technology, including nuclear safety, radioactive waste management and innovative nuclear technologies. By bringing together academic institutions, research organisations and industry partners, it continues to play a vital role in developing the skills and knowledge required for the future nuclear workforce.

The NEA continues to engage with additional countries and organisations interested in joining the NEST Framework, further strengthening international co-operation in nuclear education and training.
