Launch event of the NEA system cost study of the Swedish electricity and energy system
Director-General William D. Magwood, IV was in Stockholm, Sweden, on 3-4 March 2026 to launch the NEA system cost study of the Swedish electricity and energy system and to take part in discussions on nuclear energy with senior government representatives.
Sweden faces the largest transformation of its energy system in modern history as it aims for net zero energy emissions and increased energy security, while electrification is expected to double electricity consumption by 2050. In this context, the event organised by the NEA and the Swedish Energy Agency (SEA) gathered policymakers and nuclear energy experts on 4 March 2026 to discuss the findings of the NEA’s study undertaken in collaboration with the SEA. The study applied the latest iteration of the system cost model developed by the NEA.
“The NEA has invested significant effort in building detailed, evidence‑based scenarios and assessing their cost implications,” said NEA Director-General Magwood. “We hope this expert analysis will help inform Sweden’s energy policy discussions. The NEA stands ready to support the Swedish government as they plan for meeting the country’s energy security objectives in the most cost‑effective manner.”

The report, A Least-cost Capacity Mix to Satisfy Growing Electricity Demand without Carbon Emissions in Sweden, concludes that combining the complementary strengths of nuclear energy and onshore wind power provides a robust least-cost solution for Sweden’s 2050 objectives. The policy implications of this study as well as the energy future in Sweden were at the centre of event panel sessions and presentations.
During the visit to Sweden, the NEA Director-General was also invited to address elected officials at the Swedish Parliament during a seminar dedicated to research and infrastructure needs in the nuclear field.

A meeting with Maja Lundbäck, State Secretary to Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch, Daniel Westlén, State Secretary to Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari, and Carl Berglöf, National Nuclear Power Co-ordinator, focused on the latest developments in the nuclear energy field in Sweden and the ongoing and future co-operation with the NEA.

Director-General Magwood also met with Director-General Michael Knochenhauer and the senior leadership team of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM), to discuss the latest updates on nuclear energy regulation in Sweden, including the preparations for new generation of nuclear technologies, and potential further collaboration with the NEA.
