NEA mission to Mongolia: Focus on nuclear energy development and SMRs

NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV was in Mongolia on 20-21 February for a series of meetings with government representatives and to participate in discussions on nuclear energy development in the country.

Director-General Magwood met with Battogtokh Choijilsuren, Minister of Energy, to discuss the potential deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) in Mongolia, as well as challenges in the nuclear energy sector related to financing, supply chain disruptions and workforce development. Director-General Magwood highlighted the NEA’s work on those topics, as well as the analysis of SMR projects around the world documented in the NEA SMR Dashboard.

Meetings were held with Ulziisaikhan Ganbold, Director General of International Trade and Economic Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as with Javkhlanbaatar Sereeter, State Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Minerals, and Manlaijav Gun-Aajav, Secretary of the Nuclear Energy Commission. The discussions focused on the process of preparing for the adoption of nuclear energy technologies, including by developing legal frameworks and regulatory requirements, expanding the workforce and education programmes, and fostering public trust. Director-General Magwood emphasised the importance of international co-operation in each of those areas.

He also visited the National University of Mongolia where he engaged in discussions with students and staff and a lecture on the opportunities and challenges in the nuclear sector.

During the mission, the NEA Director-General headlined a workshop entitled Clean Energy Transition and SMR Workshop: Towards a Roadmap for Nuclear Energy in Mongolia where he provided keynote remarks and moderated a panel on nuclear energy’s role in the future energy mix of the country.
