Supporting the development of the nuclear law education programmes in higher education

The NEA Global Forum on Nuclear Education, Science, Technology and Policy (Global Forum) initiated the Working Group on Re-Establishing Nuclear Law Education Programmes to explore and assist in the development of graduate-level nuclear law programmes. The group also works on expanding the number of qualified educators to prepare a new generation of nuclear law professionals, as well as on enhancing university capacity to undertake doctoral and post-doctoral level applied research.

The working group brings together academics and professionals from different universities and law schools who exchange information on existing nuclear law programmes and discuss challenges related to the implementation of nuclear law curricula.

On 7 February 2025, the NEA Working Group on Re-Establishing Nuclear Law Education Programmes met virtually for the fifth time since it was formed in March 2023.

The meeting was led by the Chair of the working group, Paul Bowden from Nottingham Trent University (United Kingdom) and included senior academics from universities and law schools in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Two new members joined the working group for the first time from Hanyang University (Korea) and Durham Law School (United Kingdom).

The agenda of the meeting featured a discussion of the recently published Survey on Nuclear Law Workforce Planning and planning for the analysis of the data and reporting of the survey results. In addition, the working group considered how to contribute to the 2025 Global Forum Symposium, which will be hosted by the University of Michigan’s Nuclear Engineering & Radiological Sciences (NERS) department in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The working group also discussed potential avenues for early collaboration projects to increase co-operation among members throughout the year. Finally, working group members shared updates about nuclear law education both at their universities and elsewhere.

The working group will meet again in Q2 2025. For more information,  visit the working group web page or contact gf-wg5@oecd-nea.org.
