JAERI developed a partitioning process to separate elements in high-level liquid wastes into four groups: transuranium elements, Tc-platinium group metals (PGM), Sr-Cs and the remaining other elements. The DIDPA process is a solvent extraction process used to separate the TRU elements from nuclear waste in order to decrease its radiotoxicity.
