Introduction

The Nuclear Science Committee (NSC) of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) is organising a fourth workshop on the Utilisation and Reliability of High Power Accelerators. The workshop will be held in Daejeon, Republic of Korea on 16-19 May 2004. The workshop will be hosted by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).

Background

R&D activities and construction plans related to high power proton accelerators (HPPAs) are being considered in various countries to promote basic and applied sciences, including accelerator-driven nuclear energy systems (ADS). The performance of such hybrid nuclear systems depends to a large extent on the specification and reliability of the particle accelerator.

The present meeting is a follow-up to the third workshop on "Utilisation and Reliability of High Power Accelerators" that was hosted by LANL and was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA in 2002. Many of the questions discussed at that workshop will be further developed at this meeting.

Date and place of the workshop

The workshop will begin with a reception on Sunday evening, 16 May 2004. The formal programme will begin on the morning of 17 May 2004 and finish on 19 May. The workshop will be held at the International Nuclear Training and Education Center (INTEC) of KAERI, Daejeon, Korea. The web address of INTEC is http://www.kntc.re.kr

General programme of the workshop

The workshop will consist of plenary sessions with invited papers on the first day. The contributed papers and the working group discussion sessions will be organised following two days. At the end of Wednesday afternoon there will be a closeout session. The Final Workshop Programme and Abstract Book is now available (pdf format, 620 KB).

Pre-registration, abstract and final full paper submission

Participants planning to present a paper should send the title and an abstract of about 500 words via the Abstract Submission Form before 31 October 2003 (Extended to 5 December 2003). Participants will be informed by e-mail if their paper has been accepted for presentation.

Participants planning to attend the workshop should fill in the Pre-registration Form by 12 April 2004.

Final versions of invited and accepted papers must be sent in electronic form using the Final Paper Submission Form by 15 May 2004. Please note that papers not received by 15 May 2004 risk being omitted from the proceedings. The preferred format for final full papers is Microsoft Word 97. Instructions for authors are available in Word format (27 kb). Authors are kindly invited to adhere strictly to the author instructions so that the re-editing of submitted papers can be minimised and that the workshop proceedings can be published shortly after the workshop.

It is planned to allocate 30 minutes for the presentation of each invited paper and 20 minutes for each contributed paper presentation.

Important dates

31 October 2003

Extended to 5 December 2003

Proceedings

All invited and accepted papers will be included in the proceedings, which will be published by the NEA shortly after the workshop. Please note that papers not received by 15 May 2004 risk being omitted from the proceedings.

Registration desk and hospitality

Registration and a welcome cocktail reception will take place at KAERI from 5:00 to 7:00 pm., Sunday, 16 May 2004. The registration desk will be staffed throughout the workshop to assist with general information, travel arrangements, or any other special requirements. Refreshments will be provided during mid-morning and mid-afternoon breaks. The arrangement for lunch will be made by KAERI during the workshop. A banquet will be held at KAERI on Tuesday 18 May 2004.

Accommodation and transport

Many comfortable hotels are available in Yuseong (a famous hot spring area) near KAERI in Daejeon. For the workshop attendees, the Hotel Spapia is recommended. Information on accommodation and reservation at the Hotel Spapia can be found at www.hotelspapia.co.kr.

The discounted room rate for the workshop attendees will be in the order of US$90.00 per night (either single or double and including tax). Hotel reservations must be made by participants themselves via internet (www.hotelspapia.co.kr), and it must be made as early as possible, but no later than NOON on 12 April 2004 to assure availability. Please refer to the block of rooms reserved for the workshop by KAERI when making reservations.

It is recommended that participants arrive at Incheon international airport. A shuttle bus is available from the airport terminal to Daejeon every hour until 10:00 pm (the bus costs about US$11). A detailed bus schedule will be sent to participants closer to the workshop date. Daejeon is approximately a two-hour drive from Incheon airport.

On arriving in Daejeon, the bus makes several stops in Daejeon. Participants should get off at the second stop (i.e. in front of the Governmental Complex in Daejeon), and taking a taxi is the most practical to get to the Hotel Spapia (about US$4-5).

During the workshop, a shuttle bus service will be provided by KAERI to transport participants to and from the hotel.
