Actinide and Fission Product Partitioning & Transmutation

Eighth Information Exchange Meeting

Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
9-11 November 2004

Background

During the last decade interest in partitioning and transmutation has grown in many countries around the world. In the years to come, partitioning and transmutation (P&T) technology is expected to be one of the key technologies for future fuel cycles alleviating geological disposal. In order to give experts a forum to present and discuss state-of-the-art developments in the P&T field, the OECD/NEA has been holding biennial Information Exchange Meetings on Actinide and Fission Product Partitioning and Transmutation since 1990. The previous meetings were held in Mito (Japan) in 1990, at ANL (United States) in 1992, in Cadarache (France) in 1994, in Mito (Japan) in 1996, in Mol (Belgium) in 1998, in Madrid (Spain) in 2000 and in Jeju (Korea) in 2002. This eighth meeting was hosted by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and was held in co-operation with the European Commission and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Meeting scope

The meeting covered the broad spectrum of developments in the field of P&T, and emphasised in particular:

  • the role of P&T in the future of nuclear energy (raison d'être), including impacts on waste management policies;
    developments in partitioning and management of wastes produced;
  • the technology of reactors and accelerator-driven systems for use as transmutation devices; and,
    fuels for transmutation devices.

General programme of the meeting

The meeting began with presentations of national and international programmes on P&T and continued with technical sessions as follows:

General Session: National and international programmes on P&T

Session I. P&T systems and waste management

Session II. Partitioning technology

Session III. Fuels for transmutation devices

Session IV. Transmutation; General

Session V. Transmutation; ADS

Two poster sessions were organised on Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 November, covering the above five technical topics.

At the summary session, reviews and findings of each technical session were presented by the session chairs. Finally, a panel discussion on strategic issues was held, which was followed by the closing session.
