3. DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM OR FUNCTION

PUFF-2 processes ENDF/B-V uncertainty data into multigroup covariance matrices calculated for  an energy group structure and weighting function specified by the user. It requires as input multigroup cross sections together with their associated flux spectrum and energy group structure. PUFF-2 can also calculate the covariance matrices for ratio data, in which  case uncertainty data for the 'standard' reaction must be supplied.  
Covariances can then be folded with sensitivity coefficients to obtain uncertainties in selected integral parameters such as k-effective and breeding ratio.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

Cross section and flux values on a 'super energy grid', consisting of the union of the required energy group structure and the energy data points in the ENDF/B-V file, are in- terpolated from the input cross sections and fluxes. Covariance matrices are calculated for this grid and then collapsed to the re-  quired group structure.

5. RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM

PUFF-2 includes a limited treatment of resonance data uncertainties. Only the Breit- Wigner formalism can be dealt with, and no account is taken of self- shielding uncertainties.

6. TYPICAL RUNNING TIME

Typical CP time requirements on a PDP-10 range from about 1 minute, for a single 52-group covariance matrix,  to about 3 hours for multiple 52-group matrices.

8. RELATED AND AUXILIARY PROGRAMS

PUFF-2 is an updated version of the ENDF/B-IV uncertainty processor PUFF. It includes the capability of  treating the new uncertainty relationships incorporated into ENDF/ B-V, and derived uncertainties, e.g. ratio data. The uncertainty processing has been completeley separated from the cross section processing.
