3. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM OR FUNCTION

ORION is an interactive post- processor for the analysis programs NIKE2D (NESC 9923), DYNA2D (NESC 9910), TOPAZ, TOPAZ2D (NESC9801), GEM2D (NESC9679), and TACO2D. ORION reads the binary plot data files generated by the two- dimensional finite element programs used at LLNL. Contours and color fringe plots of a large number of quantities may be displayed on meshes consisting of triangular and quadrilateral elements. ORION can compute strain measures, interface pressures along slide lines, reaction forces along constrained boundaries, and momentum. ORION has the capability to plot color fringes, contour lines, vector plots, principal stress lines, deformed meshes and material outlines, time histories, reaction forces along constraint boundaries, interface pressures along slide lines, and user-supplied labels.

ORION replaces the non-interactive  postprocessors THOR and POSTACO; it is considerably faster than THOR in execution. THOR and POSTACO binary databases can be read by ORION. The LLNL-developed DIGLIB/VMS (NESC 9639) graphics software used with the DEC VAX11 version is included with that version. The Cray1 version of ORION, as supplied, produces graphics output using  the LLNL-specific PLOTLIB (NESC 9692) software. This software is not included. PLOTLIB, written in LRLTRAN, supports plotting to "view surfaces" for TMDS, RJET, and FR80 devices at LLNL.

11. MACHINE REQUIREMENTS

Graphics devices compatible with the DEC VAX11 version of ORION include the HP2648; Tektronix 4010, 4014, and 4025; RAMTEK9400 (with 7A LUT): and the DEC VT100 terminal with Retrographics enhancement. Other device drivers are available in DIGLIB but are not used by ORION. The IBM version of ORION can be used with the IBM3270 family of graphics displays or the IBM5080 graphics display system.
