3. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM OR FUNCTION

EPIPE is used to perform both static and dynamic analyses of large piping systems. The static analysis includes pressure, deadweight, and thermal loadings. Dynamic analysis is performed for earthquake motion and flow-induced vibration loads, or any combination of these.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

EPIPE determines the response of a piping system under static load from the equilibrium conditions given in matrix form. The equilibrium equations are solved using the Gaussian elimination method. Decomposition of the stiffness matrix and load vector is performed first. Then, using backward substitution, the displacement components at the active nodes are determined. After the displacements are found, the member forces of each pipe element  are computed. The dynamic response is carried out using response spectrum, time history, or step-by-step direct integration methods.

EPIPE is a modification of the general-purpose SAP4 program (NESC 641). The modification consists of deletion of the analysis options other than piping, addition of stress calculations for piping segments in accordance with the piping code ANSI B31.7, and inclusion of an independent support motion, response spectrum computation option.
