3. DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM OR FUNCTION

AERIN calculates organ and tissue burdens and doses resulting from acute exposure to a radio- active aerosol as a function of time after exposure. The Internatio- nal Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) model proposed by the Task Group on Lung Dynamics is used to predict deposition and retention of the aerosol in the lungs.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

The models and equations used are based on re-  commendations of the ICRP, which assume that the various organs and  tissues are compartments which follow first order kinetics. The human respiratory tract is divided into three compartments - the nasopharynx, tracheobronchial, and pulmonary. Equations for the doses to sections of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are derived for the varaivle daily input to the GI tract following the approach of Dolphin and Eve.

It is assumed that the blood acts only as a mechanism for the trans- port of material to the various body organs and tissues and need not be considered a separate compartment.

NESC executed the sample problem in less than 1 second of CPU time on an IBM3033.

NEA-DB ran the test case included in this package on an IBM 3083 computer in less than 0.1 seconds of CPU time.
