3. DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM OR FUNCTION

ALVIN      analyzes       the
consistency of  a set of  differential and integral  nuclear data,
adjusts the  differential nuclear data  to improve  agreement with
integral observations,  and identifies  inconsistent data.   ALVIN
also computes  required sensitivities and related  quantities such
as sensitivity profiles.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

Linear perturbation  theory is  used for  the
sensitivity   calculations.   Data   consistency  and   adjustment
computations use least squares techniques.

5. RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM

The          DAFT2
consistency and  adjustment subroutine  treats fully  or partially
correlated differential and integral parameters,  but only as many
as the  order of  the largest  matrix that  can be  inverted.  The
DAFT3  consistency and  adjustment  subroutine treats  arbitrarily
large differential  data sets, but  only if they  are uncorrelated
with the  integral data.   Due to the  current dimensions  of some
arrays, maxima of 75 spatial mesh points, 41 groups, and 6th order
Legendre  polynomials  are  allowed.   This   can  be  changed  by
increasing the dimensions of the LCM  arrays and the arrays in the
labeled COMMON block S1 and blank COMMON.

6. TYPICAL RUNNING TIME

About 1  minute is  required, depending  on
the size of the problem.  NESC  executed all three sample problems
in 20 CP seconds on a CDC7600.

7. UNUSUAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM

Data    set    consistency    is
analyzed.   A  special  algorithm  is   used  in  DAFT3  to  treat
arbitrarily large data sets.

ALVIN
makes use of  the CDC7600 UPDATE program to modify  the ALVIN code
for the third sample problem.  Therefore, extra programming effort
will be  necessary to implement  this problem on  machines without
the CDC UPDATE utility.
