3. DESCRIPTION

The RISO National Laboratory in Denmark have carried out three irradiation programs of slow ramp and hold tests, so called 'bump tests' to investigate fission gas release and fuel microstructural changes. The second project took place between 1982 and 1986 and was called "The RISO Transient Fission Gas Project".
The fuel used in the project was from: IFA-161 irradiated in the Halden BWR (27 to 42 MWd/kgUO2) and GE BWR fuel irradiated in the Millstone 1 reactor 14 to 29 MWd/kgUO2.
Using the refabrication technique, it was possible to back fill the  test segment with a choice of gas and gas pressure and to measure the time dependence of fission gas release by continuous monitoring  of the plenum pressure. The short length of the test segment was an  advantage because, depending on where along the original rod the section was taken, burnup could be chosen variable, and during the test the fuel experienced a single power.
