3. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM OR FUNCTION

For optimizing collimator systems (shieldings) for fast neutrons with energies between 10 KeV  and 20 MeV. Only elastic and inelastic neutron scattering processes  are involved. Isotropic angular distribution for inelastic scattering in the center of mass system is assumed.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

The Monte Carlo method with importance sampling technique, splitting and Russian Roulette is used. The neutron attenuation and scattering kinematics is taken into account.

5. RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM

Energy range from 10 KeV to 20 MeV. For the output spectra any bin width is possible. The output spectra are confined to 40 equidistant channels.

6. TYPICAL RUNNING TIME

The running time depends essentially on the complexity of geometry. As a rough orientation a running time of about 1 hour per 10000 starting source neutrons is needed on a TR440 computer. For modern computers this time is much lower.

NEA-DB ran the test case included in this package on a  VAX 6000 using two different random generators. With the VAX system  random generator, CPU time was 47min11sec; with the random generator from the SLATEC package, CPU time was 44min12sec.

A random number generator must be provided. In the program the TR440 subroutine FAND1 creates the random numbers.

The test was performed by NEA-DB under VAX/VMS 5.5-2. The source program was compiled using the VAX Fortran-77 compiler.

There
are some computer-specific commands (marked at the right edge of the program printout) in the program. They can be replaced by equivalent commands or taken out of the program without major problems.
