3. DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM OR FUNCTION

FOURACES produces spectrum weighted, group averaged nuclear cross sections and related parameters for nuclear reactor calulations. ENDF/B-IV, ENDF/B-V, KEDAK or UKNDL libraries may be used as basic input data. The weighting function and energy group structure are arbitrary, and are specified by the user.

The code can deal with single or multi-level Breit-Wigner Adler- Adler and Reich-Moore resonance formalisms, and includes a Doppler broadening option.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

If the weighting function is simple enough group averaged quantities are computed from the point data and interpolation rule read from the evaluated data library using analytic formulae. Otherwise the integrations are performed using the trapezium rule.

Resonance data are converted into point data using subroutines written primarily for the program CRESO (abstract NEA 0719), then Doppler broadened, and finally group averaged.

5. RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM:  A maximum of 256 energy groups can be dealt with.

6. TYPICAL RUNNING TIME

The required CPU time on an IBM 360/75 was:
a)  38 seconds for 26 groups, C-12 and U-235 using UKNDL.
b) 31 seconds for 99 groups, U-233 using ENDF/B with Doppler broa-     dening.
c)  2 minutes 43 seconds for 26 groups, U-235, using KEDAK.
NEA-DB compiled and executed the test case on IBM 3033 in 184 sec.

FOURACES can be used for evaluated data in ENDF/B, KEDAK or UKNDL format.

11. MACHINE REQUIREMENTS

The code, including buffers, requires less than 240 kbytes on a IBM 360/75. In addition to standard input and output units a library tape input, a card-image output and a scratch unit with enough space for 5000 four word records are required.
On IBM 3033 316 kbytes are required,.
