3. DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM OR FUNCTION

SCAT-2 is designed as a fast, easy-to-use program to calculate total cross sections, elastic scattering cross sections and their angular distributions, and transmission coefficients from the optical model of a spherical nucleus.

The calculation is performed at a specified set of energies for one  of the following incident particles: neutron, proton, deuteron, triton, helium-3 or alpha.

The nuclear potential contains the following terms: Coulomb, a real  volume Woods-Saxon potential, an imaginary surface Woods-Saxon or Gaussian potential, an imaginary volume Woods-Saxon potential, and a spin-orbit potential.

SCAT-2B extends the incident particles to include also heavy ions.
NEA-0829/07
Summary of modifications in SCAT-2 (2010 version):
- The optical potential has been extended to include an imaginary spin-orbit component and the Koning-Delaroche optical model parameterization has been incorporated.
- The maximum number of input energies was increased from 50 to 150.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

A partial wave expansion of the Schroedinger equation is numerically integrated using Cowell's method, described  in the reference by Melkanoff.
top ]
5. RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM

A maximum of 50 incident particle energies can be specified.
NEA-0829/07
SCAT-2 (2010 version): A maximum of 150 incident particle energies can be specified.

7. UNUSUAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM

To reduce input requirements to a  minimum, the most frequently used choices of parameters to define the nuclear potential have been incorporated into the coding.
