3. NATURE OF PHYSICAL PROBLEM SOLVED

Boltzmann's transport equation (in integral form) is solved numerically for gamma rays in plane or spherical geometry.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

Each of the three dimensions (space, energy, angle) is described by a mesh point set, and the integrals in the transport equation are approximated by sums.

5. RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM

At most 51 energy groups, 9 angular mesh points, 9 materials, 9 regions, 30 elements in the library, 9 source energies, 6 wavelength steps, 4 arbitrary response functions. Upper limit for spatial points is 39 in the version for the IBM 7090 and 90 in that for the IBM 360/65.

6. TYPICAL RUNNING TIME

On the IBM 7090 (if no tapes are used) about  20-30 sec per spatial point.

7. UNUSUAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM

The exponential transformation allows the choice of large spatial steps in thick source-free shield regions, up to about 2 mfp, so a shield 20 mfp thick can be calculated in a time of about 5 min on the IBM 7090, and in much less on the IBM 360/65.
