3. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM OR FUNCTION

NATURE OF PHYSICAL PROBLEM SOLVED. Evaluates accurate peak areas of  gamma-ray and x-ray spectra generated by Ge(Li) and Si(Li) spectrometers. Photopeaks are approximated by a function comprising two Gaussians and an arctangent superimposed upon a cubic polynomial background.

4. METHODS

METHOD OF SOLUTION. The analytic peak function is applied to spectra by virtue of the iterative Newton-Raphson non-linear least-squares fitting techniques. The resulting set of equations is solved by pivotal condensation with back substitution.

RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM. Peak analysis is limited to singlets of known energy, the package does not include automatic peak search, energy calibration or multiplet analysis facilities.

TYPICAL RUNNING TIME. Strongly dependent upon how well the peak is resolved, but a reasonable mean estimate is around 6 sec/peak on a 370/155.

7. UNUSUAL FEATURES

UNUSUAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM. The package allows singlet photopeaks to be accurately characterised rendering in addition to peak area, accurate estimates of centroid position, peak height, width and background in peak vicinity. It is typically found that the error computed for the area of each individual peak is of the order of twice the uncertainty to be expected purely from statistics.
