3. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM OR FUNCTION

The SQUIRT software is designed to perform leakage rate and area of crack opening calculations for through-wall cracks in pipes. The fluid in the piping system is assumed to be water at either subcooled or saturated conditions. The development of the SQUIRT computer model enables licensing authorities and industry users to conduct the leak-rate evaluations  for leak-before-break applications in a more efficient manner.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

The SQUIRT program uses a modified form of the  Henry-Fauske model for the thermal-hydraulics analysis together with Elastic-Plastic Fracture Mechanics using GE/EPRI and LBB.ENG2 methods for crack opening analysis.

5. RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM

Squirt requires 512  KB of conventional memory and an organized structure. Software can only be executed from the main SQUIRT23 directory where the software was installed.

6. TYPICAL RUNNING TIME

Run time requirements depend highly on the type of PC but most runs requires less than 2 minutes.

The program SQUIRT was installed and the sample problems were executed on a PC DELL Optiplex GXM 5100 equipped with  a Pentium processor of 99 MHz and 32 MByte of total memory. The program is interactive; however, only a few seconds are necessary to run the computational parts of the sample problems.

7. UNUSUAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM

Squirt is mainly an interactive system with the user guided through a series of friendly menus. The  software accounts for crack growth by using the elastic-plastic fracture analysis with the J-R curve of the material. The software also calculates the crack size for a given load, leakage rate, thermal-hydraulic conditions, and the pressure loss coefficient.

order to execute the SQUIRT program, the user must be in the SQUIRT23 directory. SQUIRT cannot be executed from other directories or sub-directories. During execution, the user may use other directories to supply/store input-output data.
