3. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM OR FUNCTION

The Radiation Exposure Monitoring and Information Transmittal (REMIT) system is designed to assist U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensees in meeting the reporting requirements of the Revised 10 CFR Part 20 and in agreement with the guidance contained in Regulatory Guide 8.7, Rev.1, Instructions for Recording and Reporting Occupational Exposure Data. REMIT is a personal computer (PC) -based menu driven  system that facilitates the manipulation of data base files to record and report radiation exposure information. REMIT is designed  to be user-friendly and contains the full text of Regulatory Guide 8.7, Rev.1, on-line as well as context-sensitive help throughout the program. The user can enter data directly from NRC Form 5s or Form 4s. REMIT allows the user to view the individual's exposure in relation to regulatory or administrative limits and will alert the user to exposures in excess of these limits. The system also provides for the calculation and summation of dose from intakes and  the determination of the dose to the maximally exposed extremity for the monitoring year. REMIT can produce NRC Form 5s and 4s in paper and electronic format and can import/export data from ASCII and data base files.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

REMIT makes use of the dose conversion factors  from EPA Report 11 Limiting Values of Radionuclide Intake and Air Concentration and Dose Conversion Factors for Inhalation, Submission, and Ingestion, to calculate the Committed Dose Equivalent to the maximally exposed organ and the committed Effective Dose Equivalent from intakes measured in microcuries. REMIT also estimates the amount (in micrograms) of uranium intake from the activity entered in microcuries. This calculation is based  on the specific activities of the uranium isotopes.

5. RESTRICTIONS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM

REMIT is a single- user system that only runs on IBM compatible PC systems under DOS and supports only Hewlett Packard LaserJet Series II compatible printers. Due to memory usage conflicts, REMIT will not run under Microsoft Windows. REMIT was not designed for use with Windows. REMIT was not designed for use on a PC network. The application will execute, however, REMIT does not have file and record locking features needed to protect against multi-user access to the database files. For 286 computers, the system must have at least 2 megabyte LIM 4.0 compatible expanded memory. For 386 (or higher) computers, the system requires at least 2 megabytes extended memory available and no expanded memory. If expanded memory is present, REMIT will attempt to make use of it instead of extended memory. Since REMIT uses extended memory much more efficiently than expanded memory on a 386 machine, all references to expanded memory in your CONFIG.SYS file should be removed in order for REMIT to make use of extended memory. REMIT uses dBASE III compatible file structures for all licensees records. ASCII file structures are also supported to a limited extent in that REMIT will produce electronic ASCII files for submittal to the NRC and import/export certain data in electronic format. REMIT does not handle bioassay or air sampling data. These issues tend to be complex and the vast majority of monitored individuals do not require these calculations. REMIT does not handle fetal dose monitoring information.

7. UNUSUAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM

REMIT allows NRC Licensees to send NRC Form 5 data to the NRC in an electronic format. This ensures standardization of data and facilitates the submittal of information to the NRC. REMIT also allows the user to print Forms 4 and 5 on hardcopy and to transmit Form 4 data from site to site in electronic format. Licensees may import dosimetry processor data electronically into REMIT, automatically updating the dose records for monitored individuals.

11. MACHINE REQUIREMENTS

REMIT requires 5.5 MB hard disk space, at least 500 KB of base memory, and 2MB of expanded memory. It also requires that the FILES parameter in CONFIG.SYS be set to at least thirty.
