Introduction

The Nuclear Science Committee (NSC) of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) is organising a third workshop on "Utilisation and Reliability of High Power Accelerators". The workshop will be held at Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA on May 12-16 2002. The workshop will be hosted by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

Background

R&D activities and construction plans related to high power proton accelerators (HPPAs) are being considered in various countries to promote basic and applied sciences, including accelerator-driven nuclear energy systems (ADS). The performance of such hybrid nuclear systems depends to a large extent on the specification and reliability of the particle accelerator.

The present meeting is a follow-up to the second workshop on "Utilisation and Reliability of High Power Accelerators" that was hosted by CEA Cadarache and was held in Aix-en-Provence, France in 1999. Many of the questions discussed at that workshop will be further developed at this meeting. In addition, there will be specific presentations devoted to safety, regulatory and technological requirements for the commissioning, operation and restart of hybrid nuclear systems. A tentative list of topics is given below.

Dates and place of the workshop

The workshop will begin with a reception on Sunday evening, May 12, 2002. The formal programme will begin on the morning of May 13, 2002 and finish during the morning of May 16. The workshop will be held at the Hotel Loretto, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA where a block of rooms have also been reserved. Additional information on accommodation can be found on the Hotel Accommodation Form.

List of topics

The meeting will consist of plenary sessions with invited papers on the first day and contributed papers given on the mornings of the following two days. The participants will break into working groups to discuss and work through a set of questions on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. Each day will end with a general discussion and on Thursday morning there will be a closeout session.

Topics of contributed papers to include:

  • Accelerators
  • Windows
  • Target
  • Multiplier
  • Control
  • Safety/Shutdown
  • Facility Operations
