Thermal Cycling in LWR Components in OECD-NEA Member Countries

In 2002, the Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) requested the Working Group on the Integrity and Ageing of Reactor Components and Structures (WGIAGE) to prepare a programme of work on thermal cycling to provide information to NEA member countries on operational experience, regulatory policies, countermeasures in place, current status of research and development, and to identify areas where research is needed both at national and international levels. The working group proposed a three-fold programme that covered:

  • review of operating experience, regulatory framework, countermeasures and current research;
  • benchmark to assess calculation capabilities in NEA member countries for crack initiation and propagation under a cyclic thermal loading;
  • organisation of an international conference in cooperation with the EPRI and the USNRC on fatigue of reactor components.

The current report addresses the first item.
