Java Web Start

You will need to have Java Web Start installed in order to launch JANIS online. If it is not installed, you will be redirected to the Java Web Start set-up page. Java Web Start comes with all recent Java Runtime Environment installations, so if you have Java installed then you probably already have Java Web Start. For more information see about Java.

By using Java Web Start you will only download the application, not the data. JANIS will later access remote NEA data, through HTTP. Note that you can also use the DVD databases with JANIS launched from the web. Find out more on this help page to learn how to do.

Reasons for using Webstart

Warning dialog

After the splash screen you will get this sort of warning:

This is due to the fact that downloaded Java programs must have security certificates. Certificates cost money and JANIS is free so we have decided to use a self-made certificate, this is why you get this warning. You can safely validate this dialog box.

What happens if Java or Java Web start is not installed ?

You will obtain a dialog like one of these :

Windows - Internet Explorer

Linux - Firefox

You should check if you have Java installed and take care of enabling browser integration during installation. Go here for more information : About Java.
