Nuclear safety

Members of the NEA network of nuclear regulators liaised with each other shortly after the incident at the Forsmark-1 NPP in Sweden on 27 July 2006, where two emergency diesel generators failed to start following a disturbance of offsite power. The incident raised media interest in several countries and provided an opportunity to enhance the exchange of nuclear operating experience within the NEA network. This information exchange took in both the technical aspects of the incident itself and nuclear regulatory communications with the public. Whilst the responsibility for nuclear safety resides with the national authorities, the NEA's role in facilitating the dissemination of the lessons learnt from any incident helps improve nuclear safety worldwide.

Legal affairs

The sixth session of the International School of Nuclear Law (ISNL), a programme jointly organised by the NEA and the University of Montpellier 1, took place from 21 August to 1 September 2006 in Montpellier. The ISNL aims to provide a high-quality programme on all aspects of the law governing the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Classes cater to both law students pursuing their studies at masters or doctoral level who are interested in specialising in this field and to professionals already active in the nuclear sector. The 2006 session brought together 61 participants from 30 countries. More information is available at: www.oecd-nea.org/general/mnb/2006/09-law.html.
