Nuclear safety

A workshop on the use and long-term performance of concrete in nuclear power plant fuel cycle facilities will be held in Madrid, Spain on 15-16 March 2004. The workshop's objectives are to assess current practices and the state of the art. The resulting assessment will be used to identify gaps in present knowledge in order to formulate and prioritise research needs in the field. More information is available at: www.oecd-nea.org/nsd/workshops/RILEMOECD2004/.

A workshop on international developments in risk-informed, in-service inspection (RI-ISI) and non-destructive testing (NDT) qualification will be held in Stockholm, Sweden on 13-14 April 2004. The objective of this workshop is to assess the present situation, taking in regulatory, utility and industry perspectives, as well as member country experiences and R&D activities to date on these issues. More information is available at: www.oecd-nea.org/nsd/workshops/RISI2004/.

Radioactive waste management

An international conference on efforts worldwide to dispose of radioactive materials in geological repositories will be held in Stockholm, Sweden on 7-10 December 2003. The conference will address both policy and technical aspects of the issue. Participants will include high-level decision makers and other interested stakeholders at the national, regional and local levels, as well as representatives from regulatory bodies. This is the second international conference on the subject, the first having been held in Denver, USA in 1999. Co-sponsored by the NEA, the conference will be hosted by the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company. More information, including online conference registration, is available at: www.congrex.se/sth-conf-03/.

Nuclear science

The second Information Exchange Meeting on the Nuclear Production of Hydrogen was held at the Argonne National Laboratory, USA on 2-3 October 2003. Participants noted substantial scientific progress since the last meeting three years ago -- especially in the number of papers presented with experimental results. Participants also stressed the need for further research into the existing methods by which nuclear power plants can produce hydrogen, whilst continuing R&D work on promising new concepts. It is proposed to organise another meeting on this subject, possibly in autumn 2004 or 2005. The detailed meeting agenda can be found at: www.oecd-nea.org/science/hydro/iem2/agenda.html. The meeting proceedings will be published shortly.
