A workshop on the "Implementation of Severe Accident Management (SAM) Measures" was held at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Villigen, Switzerland on 10-13 September 2001. Thirty-five papers were presented over four sessions covering the following areas: SAM Programme Implementation; SAM Approaches; SAM Mitigation Measures; Implementing SAM Measures with VVER-1000 Reactors. A workshop on "Licensing and Operating Experience of Computer-based Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Systems" was held at Hluboka nad Vltavou, Czech Republic, on 25-27 September 2001. The Hluboka workshop discussed recent progress in the development of digital I&C systems and their practical applications in NEA Member country nuclear power plants. Regular features
A new expert group to address the process of stakeholder involvement in radiological risk assessment and management, the EGPSI, has been created by the Committee on Radiation Protection and Public Health (CRPPH). Meeting for the first time in early September, the EGPSI agreed to develop a summary of policy-level implications of stakeholder involvement and a document on good practice. A third Villigen workshop will be organised in the 2003 timeframe. The first meeting of the CRPPH Expert Group on the Implications of Effluent Release Options (EGRO) was held on 13-14 September 2001. The CRPPH formed this group with the aim of identifying the different effluent release scenarios for nuclear power plants during normal operation. The group will evaluate the radiological, environmental and technical implications of these scenarios, should they be implemented. During its first meeting, the group prepared a work plan and outline of its final report, which may be used in future national and international discussions of the subject.
PWR Main Steam-Line Break Benchmark
A final workshop on "Numerical and Computational Aspects of the Coupled Three-Dimensional Core/Plant Simulations: OECD/NRC Pressurized Water Reactor Main Steam-Line Break Benchmark" was held on 18-19 June 2001 in Milwaukee, USA. In addition to producing a summary paper, participants' solutions and interpretation of the benchmark were presented and discussed at the workshop. The workshop papers will be published in Nuclear Technology. A brief summary of the benchmark study can be found at www.oecd-nea.org/science/transients/mslbs.html. BWR Turbine Trip Benchmark
The final version of Boiling Water Reactor Turbine Trip (TT) Benchmark, Volume I: Final Specifications is now available at www.oecd-nea.org/science/docs/2001/nsc-doc2001-1.pdf. A second workshop on this topic is scheduled on 15-16 October 2001 at the PSI, Villigen, Switzerland. The third and concluding workshop will be held in May 2002 in Rossendorf, Germany. Preservation of knowledge
The OECD/NEA Nuclear Science Committee (NSC) has identified the need to establish international databases containing all the important integral experiments of relevance for reactor physics, shielding and the physics of the fuel cycle. The NSC has set up or sponsored specific activities to achieve this aim. The goal is to preserve the experiments in an agreed, standard, computer-accessible format. The NEA Data Bank will be present at the forthcoming Conference on Nuclear Data for Science and Technology to be held in Tsukuba, Japan on 7-12 October 2001. All participants at the conference are invited to browse the material available at the Data Bank stand. A separate stand for the Network of Nuclear Reaction Data Centres will also be present and the NEA Data Bank will be exhibiting its work in common with this network.
Vacancy
The NEA is looking for a Junior Programmer to work under the general supervision of the Data Bank's System Manager. His/her main responsibilities will be to participate in the monitoring of the scientific data network and assist in the maintenance and development of the software interfaces involving Oracle databases in a Unix environment (including High Performance Computing with Unix clusters).
