Nuclear safety

Nuclear safety news Regular features

Radiation protection

In the tradition of the NEA-initiated INEX exercises, an extensive international nuclear emergency exercise, INEX 2000/JINEX 1, was carried out on 22-23 May 2001, based on a French national exercise at the Gravelines nuclear power plant in the north of France, near the Belgian border. The exercise involved a simulated incident in the fictitious Gravelines Unit 11 including a release of radioactivity to the environment. More information is available at 01-05-rp.html.

Legal affairs

The second part of the INEX 2000 Exercise mentioned above is an International third party liability Workshop. Based on the scenario from the scientific/technical exercise of 22 May, the workshop will take place on 26-28 November 2001 in Paris. More information is available at 01-05-rp.html.

Radioactive waste management

The Working Party on Management of Materials from Decommissioning and Dismantling (WPDD) met for the first time in Paris on 17-18 May 2001. More information about the Working Party and the meeting's conclusions are available at 01-05-rwm.html.

Nuclear science

A meeting of the Expert Group on “Pyrochemical separations” was held in Issy-les-Moulineaux, France on 16-17 May 2001. The main objective of this Group is to write a state-of-the-art report on pyrochemistry by the end of 2002. The report will cover national programmes, international collaborations, future applications and specific research needs.
