The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) is a semi-autonomous body which deals with intergovernmental co-operation on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

The NEA Radiological Protection and Radioactive Waste Management Division is looking for a specialist with confirmed experience to carry out, under the supervision of the Head of Division, and in collaboration with senior staff, various scientific, technical and policy-related activities in support of the NEA programme of work in the area of radiological protection. He/she will service working groups of the Committee on Radiation Protection and Public Health (CRPPH), in areas relevant to the nuclear fuel cycle, including regulatory aspects, environmental radiological protection, emergency management and occupational radiological protection.

Job duties

1. General
Manage and contribute to international co-operation and projects in the area of radiological protection and various related technical and policy areas in line with the programme of work of the Committee on Radiation Protection and Public Health (CRPPH) and its ancillary bodies.

2. Scientific Secretariat
Provide technical and organisational assistance and expert input for meetings of the CRPPH and its ancillary bodies, in particular for the CRPPH Working Party on Nuclear Emergency Matters and its INEX (International Nuclear Emergency Exercise) programme, and to international co-operative projects such as the ISOE (Information System on Occupational Exposure). This will include active participation in expert groups and the preparation of meetings, drafting of summary records and other support functions.

3. Workshops and Reports
Organise scientific workshops and conferences, including financial aspects and documentation. Contribute to drafting of scientific and technical reports, and policy-relevant documents, including coordination of contributions of externral experts and consultants.

4. Communication and Co-operation
Report on the work of assigned groups to the Agency’s committees and expert groups as well as on international conferences and specialists' meetings. Co-operate with other relevant NEA Standing Technical Committees and their ancillary bodies and provide expert input as requested. Liaise and coordinate with other national and international organisations as appropriate. Report on and present the work of the NEA in this area to external audiences.

5. Other
Perform other tasks as assigned by the Head of the Radiological Protection and Radioactive Waste Management Division.

Qualifications: education, experience, communication and languages

1. Education and experience
• Advanced university degree in radiological protection, physics, engineering, chemistry, biology/human sciences, or equivalent qualifications.
• Five to seven years' experience in radiological protection relevant to nuclear energy, including regulatory aspects, environmental radiological protection, emergency management and occupational radiological protection. Experience in radiological protection issues of waste disposal would be an advantage.
 
2. Key competencies
• Ability to structure and to plan work in order to meet essential deadlines and to understand and resolve conflicting viewpoints.
• Experience in interacting with national and international experts, regulatory authorities and research institutions.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to co-operate in a cross-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment.

3. Communication and OECD official languages
• Excellent knowledge of English and a demonstrated ability to draft and present clear and concise reports in that language. Working knowledge of French.

N.B. The appointment may initially be made at the level immediately below if the qualifications and professional experience of the selected applicant corresponds to that level: in this case, the duties and responsibilities assigned to the post will be adjusted accordingly.
